A tall, lean figure leaned against the white wall of his room, smoking his usual morning cigarette and looked out the window, a small smile plastered on his handsome face. He brushed back his short cropped flaming red hair and rubbed his eyes, still sleepy. He stubbed out the cigarette and walked towards the tiny kitchen, looking for something that was actually considered edible to be eaten as his so-called breakfast. He passed by several framed pictures, one of them that he loved so much.

His highschool graduation picture. He was all smiles that day, and his friends were too. The main focus of the picture was of course him and his friends, showing off their certificates, but what made him love it was the figure that had accidentally stepped in front of the camera when the picture was taken. The quiet, serious boy that he had known ever since he was a little kid, until now.

// I wanted to be like you
I wanted everything
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away //

Niikura Kaoru was his name, though not many people knew that. Only the students who actually paid attention to the school’s academic performance knew the name of the young boy, including the redhead, Ando Daisuke, or more lovingly known as Die. The only reason he had paid attention was because his mother forced him to be up to date with what happened at his school, and she wanted a full report at the end of every month. Not that he couldn’t lie, he just didn’t like to. Plus, it caused him to know about this Kaoru person more closely.

They had been neighbors, but they weren’t very close. Kaoru was so keen on his studies even when he was still a little kid, and his mother did nothing to discourage him in any way. That caused him to be successful at everything he did, because he worked so hard to get what he wanted.

Oblivious to the other man, Die had been watching Kaoru’s every move ever since they got into the same highschool, admiring the way he took so much responsibility and still be an excellent student in school. Kaoru never really associated with him because he was one of those happy-go-lucky people, the one’s who didn’t care so seriously about their studies and spent most of their time having fun and living life.

In college, Die’s observation continued. Even though they were two very different people, but somehow, they managed to get in the same college, and this time, Kaoru was too keen on his studies to realize if there were anyone he knew that went there as well.

And now, they worked together in the same company. Well, not together, actually, but they were on the same team, supposedly, the only difference was that Kaoru was a very talented and successful composer and co-producer, and Die, well, Die was just one of those office boys that tended to the files in the Promotion Department. Kaoru never took a step out of his office and the reason that Die found out he worked with him was when he was delivering some files to Kaoru’s office. He was surprised at first, but Kaoru didn’t recognize him so he just didn’t say anything about it.

Die snapped out of his thoughts and looked at the clock that was happily ticking away. His eyes widened in shock, and he rushed to the bathroom, taking a quick shower, promising himself never again to oogle over the picture on his respective bookshelf.

‘ But then again… I promise myself that everyday and I still do it..’ he chuckled to himself before bustling around busily looking for his clothes.

~~

“ Ohayou gozaimasu, Niikura-san!” a lady chirped at him.

Kaoru nodded slightly at her, his ears cringing from the constant chirping coming from the womenfolk of the company. He heaved a sigh of relief as soon as he reached his office and took out a cigarette and lit it.

‘ You’d think that they’d cut the silly cuteness attempt and get on with life,’ he thought to himself sardonically, shaking his head slowly.

He held the cigarette between his slender fingers and looked at the files that were stacked up neatly on the table. He flipped through some of them and carelessly scribbled his signature on some of them. He felt grateful that at least if the women of the company were too busy titillating themselves, at least there were responsible people that actually did their job like they had one. Like himself, for instance, and his co-producer, Yoshiki.

Or that hardworking, always smiling redhead that delivers files to departments.

What was his name? Kaoru couldn’t remember, but he knew that his face was strangely familiar, like he had known him all his life.

“ Kaoru? I need to talk to you.” A voice called to him from the door.

The purplehead looked up and saw Yoshiki standing there, hands in pockets and cigar between lips, looking like some kind of CEO.

“ Yes?” Kaoru replied, stubbing out his cigarette.

“ It’s about the composition we worked on yesterday… they can’t play it. It doesn’t suit their current image.” The co-producer told him straight-forwardly, not batting an eyelash.

Kaoru shrugged. He had been through situtations like this, he knew what he had to do.

“ Fine. Call them and we’ll do the composition again.” He told the older man, turning away from him slightly.

“ Hai.”

~~
=====

Wow, just look at him! If I were in his place right now and someone told me that some person can’t play what I composed, I’d probably tell them to go fuck themselves until they got it right.

But him, he just simply said that he’d talk to them about the problem, and redo the whole thing..

God, Kaoru, how can you be so perfect? Look at you, you’re handsome, you’re desirable, you’re talented, successful and filthy rich. How I’d give anything to be just like you. But we both know that I can never be anything like you. How can an office boy that delivers files become a composer and producer?

I’ve looked up to you ever since we were kids, living next door to each other. You hardly came out because you were studying, preparing for school. You see, that is something that I would’ve never done, and look at me now. And look at you. So perfect.

How can I be like you?
=====

“ Do you need something?” a voice suddenly said, making Die jump in surprise.

He turned around and faced Hayashi Yoshiki, the co-producer. He smiled weakly and gestured towards the files in his arms.

“ Just delivering these,” he grinned, setting them on the secretary’s table. “ Gotta go!” he gave a small wave and ran away as fast as he could.

‘ Close call… but I know what I have to do now. I’m gonna try and be like him, hardworking and I’ll never give up! I’ll do my best to improve myself, ganbatte!!’ Die thought to himself, planning all the things that he would be doing from then on.

He was going to change.

~~

“ Die, you’ve changed. Are you ill?” one of his workmates, Toshiya, asked him.

Die looked mildly surprised. He knew that he was changing, he was working overtime and he was much more hardworking than he had ever been.

“ No, I’m not ill. Why?” he asked, raising a fine eyebrow.

“ Well, if you must know, your other workmates don’t really want to be very near you anymore, don’t you realize that, Die? You know why?” Toshiya replied, looking at the redhead intently.

“ No, why?” Die asked, curiously.

“ Because you’ve changed, that’s why! You’re not being who you really are, you’re acting like some kind of crazy workaholic! If you continue this stupid masquerade, you’ll lose everything you have now, you know that?” the taller one told him, raising his voice a bit.

Die looked taken aback, but he knew the truth in his friend’s words. He *was* trying to be something that he wasn’t, he was way out of line here.

He was just trying to be more like Kaoru, to be more successful.

// I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone
to show you the way
So I took your hand and we figured out
That when the tide comes
I'd take you away //

~~

Kaoru looked at the graph chart in front of him, bored as hell. He was finished with the compositions that were due that day, and now he was just waiting for something to fall in his lap.

And something did, a file.

He looked up, surprised, and was even more surprised to see a sheepish-looking redhead smiling at him.

“ Ano… sorry? I must be getting clumsy these days.. gomen,” Die bowed slightly to the man in front of him, who didn’t look at all upset.

“ It’s alright. You have a lot of files to hold, anyway.” Kaoru shrugged and handed the file to the tall man and sat back in chair, going through the graph charts one more time.

But the office boy didn’t move, instead he fidgeted a little bit with the files and stammered a little bit.

“ Ne, it’s almost lunchtime… wanna join me? I know a terrific place, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it ne! We can catch up on old times, too!” Die asked quickly, looking at the purplehead hopefully.

Kaoru blinked. Was this guy actually asking him out to lunch, just like that? No business, but to catch up on old times? What kind of person was this redhead?

“ What old times?” he asked, curious.

Die looked surprised, but he just smiled.

“ You really don’t remember me, huh? Ando Daisuke, the boy next door… I hid your homework when we were in highschool… come on! You surely remember!” Die tried refreshing his memory.

It worked.

“ Daisuke? Die? You’re the one that always played tricks on me during school, right? Now I remember!” Kaoru’s eyes sparkled, he was finally talking to someone that knew him ever since he was little!

“ Yeah! Come on, lunch is on me!” Die said again, and Kaoru was happy to accept.

~~

“ You worked really hard… I can’t imagine all the hardships that you went through… I would’ve never done things like you did!” the redhead commented, taking a sip out of his juice.

“ How about you? What have you been doing so far?” Kaoru asked, sipping his coffee.

The two were having lunch at a place that Die always ate with his friends, but today, they were eating sushi, so he backed away from their offer. He wasn’t surprised when he heard what Kaoru was doing for the past years, it was clear that he had been working hard, and he had gotten a lot out of his hard work. And eventhough he wanted to be as successful as the purplehead, he knew he wouldn’t ever be able to be like him without becoming something else.

“ Well, tell you the truth, I’ve been having fun most of the time, it surprises me that I’m even employed right now. I haven’t been working as hard as you, so you can see the difference between us now, ne?” Die laughed and took another sip out of his juice.

Kaoru remained silent when he heard of all the enjoying things that Die has been doing throughout the years, and compared them to what he has been doing. He remembered all the lonely nights that he spent alone, with nobody to talk to, and not even any fond, happy memories that he could visit. All of them were of the times of hardship that he went through, and now he was effectively masking them behind his wonderful and promising career.

He wasn’t even sure if he enjoyed it anymore, but he did know that he worked hard to achieve it, and he was gonna work until time ate him alive. Just like that, spending his whole life working hard. He’d probably die because of being overworked, too.

His face fell.

“ And then there was that time when –“ Die stopped in the middle of his sentence when he saw the change of expression on the purplehead’s face.

“ Kaoru? Are you okay?” he asked, worried.

“ I’m fine… just… I’ve been working so hard all these years, Die. Do you see me going out partying with friends? Never, right? That’s the price I had to pay to be where I am now. Loveless.” Kaoru replied dully.

“ Kao…”

“ Well, at least I have a promising career that’ll someday make me die of overwork and exhaustion! Just like I had pictured when I was studying in highschool…” Kaoru gave a humorless laugh. “ If you don’t mind, I have to get back to my promising career. I have a promising meeting this afternoon, and I need to get ready for it. Thanks for lunch, it was great.” With that, he got up and stalked away, his shoulders stiff.

=====
I never knew he felt like that. I thought that he was happy, being rich and all, being able to do what he wanted, and getting what he wanted.

But he sounds so… lonely?

I should’ve realized before, but he keeps his emotions so masked and hidden! Well, the thick mask finally had to break, and it chose today to break. In front of me.

I don’t get it, really. He’s perfect! He’s everything any guy would want to be, and he’s making it look like it’s the worst punishment that he can get. Or maybe I just can’t quite see his life the way he does.

My poor Kaoru… well, not *my* Kaoru.

Poor Kaoru.
=====

After that day, Die had been treating Kaoru very nicely, talking to him more often, joking with him and calling him, trying to make him feel better. Kaoru knew what the redhead was up to, but he didn’t dare voice it out, just in case he’d lose all that he had right now. He knew it wasn’t right of him, but just couldn’t help it.

It was way past office hours, but at usual, Kaoru was sitting in the recording room, trying out some notes like sleep didn’t exist to him in his world. He kept on pressing the keys of his electric keyboard and wrote down notes on a sheet of paper, humming the tune as he did his work. He was so indulged in his work that he didn’t see the figure creeping in the door and closing it behind him. He only turned around when he heard the door close.

“ Die? What the hell are you doing here? Don’t tell me you’re still sorting out the files?” he asked, looking up and down at the grinning man in front of him.

Die rubbed the back of his head sheepishly and produced two beer cans from behind his back, tossing one to the purplehead. Kaoru deftly caught it and held it in his hands.

“ What’s this for?” he asked skeptically.

“ Nothing. Just thought you could use a drink, that’s all.” Die smiled charmingly.

Kaoru looked flustered.

“ Look, you don’t have to keep on doing this… I can take care of myself, you don’t have to always be there for me, you know,” he looked up at his friend.

“ That’s where you’re wrong. Whether you need me or not, I’ll always be there for you.” Die smiled warmly at the blushing person in front of him.

// If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted
was somebody who cares //

~~

“ No, it’s not like this! You should’ve done it the other way around, now what will they think, Kaoru? Where did your common sense go?” Yoshiki yelled, gesturing towards the scoresheet in his hand.

Kaoru just remained silent as he heard his co-producer tell him off. He turned a pen round and round between his slender fingers and stared up at the older man, his eyes not bearing any sign of emotion. Yoshiki finally realized that his scoldings weren’t bringing any effect to the younger man in front of him and he slammed down the paper on Kaoru’s desk.

“ Here. Redo it, I don’t care how long it takes. You have until tomorrow afternoon. I want it by then, understand? Your time limit starts now.” He said, briskly walking out of the neat office.

Kaoru sighed and buried his head in his arms. He felt the tears that were threatening to fall, and he looked at the rejected papers in front of him.

‘ Somebody please save me…’ he pleaded internally and got up, ready to redo the whole composition.

He looked at the music notes blankly, and tried to play them. It sounded fine to him, but Yoshiki said it was wrong, so it must be wrong. He sighed again and started the new composition, ready to stay there until morning came.

~~

“ I’ve been working on the railroad… lalalala… la?” Die stopped singing when he looked up at the building that he had just come out of.

One of the lights were still on, and there was a shadow in it. Die immediately ran back in the building and ran up the stairs, taking two steps at a time.

‘ Damn! That’s Kaoru’s studio… if someone steals anything from it..’ Die thought frantically, running up the stairs and finally reached his destination, out of breath and gasping for air.

He looked around for something to defend himself with, and held onto his briefcase tightly, ready to swing it to the robber’s head. He closed his eyes as he neared the door and put his hand on the knob. He slowly twisted it and kicked the door open, yelling as he swung up his briefcase.

“ Yahhhhhh!!! Get out if you wanna live you –“

“ Die?” a familiar voice said.

Die opened his eyes and looked at the red eyed purplehead that was seated in front of an electric keyboard.

“ Kaoru? What are you doing here? I thought there was a –“

“ Robber? Yeah, could’ve been. I’ve been robbing my freedom from myself all my life ne.” Kaoru replied tonelessly, looking at his compositions and pressing random keys on his keyboard.

Die lowered his briefcase and walked towards Kaoru who was beginning to ignore his presence. He looked over the smaller one’s shoulder at the composition, seeing so many crossouts and re-written notes.

“ Did Hayashi-san tell you to redo it all tonight?” Die asked quietly.

Kaoru nodded. He wrote some notes on the paper and stifled a yawn. That didn’t go unnoticed by the redhead and Die bent over to look at Kaoru who had bags under his eyes. He grabbed his shoulders and shook them, hard.

“ Kao! Get a grip! Why are you called co-producer if you have to follow all that bastard tells you to do? He doesn’t have the right to!” Die yelled at him, shaking him.

The purplehead looked up at him weakly. He smiled sadly and wrenched himself out of Die’s strong grasp.

“ No one saved me from him… I just couldn’t do it myself…” he replied. “ Go home, Die. I’ll be fine. I’ve stayed up all night before, this isn’t any different.” His voice was toneless.

Die looked angry. He pulled Kaoru up and grabbed the other one’s coat and bag, dragging him out of the room and setting him on his feet in the hallway.

“ There. I saved you from that room, from the assignment, now I’m saving you from yourself. Tonight we’re gonna go and have fun!” Die said firmly.

Kaoru didn’t respond.

~~

“ WOOHOOO!!! Yeahhhhh!!!” Die screamed out as the rollercoaster went through another sharp turn. He glanced at the still figure next to him. Kaoru caught him looking and pretended that he was having a good time.

“ Oh yay. I’m on a rollercoaster, wohhoo.” He said tonelessly, giving Die a pointed look.

The rollercoaster came to a stop and the purplehead was the first one off. He hated those things, eventhough that was only his second time on one. The first time was a few minutes ago where Die dragged him to go and ‘have fun.’

“ Okay, so no more rollercoasters. Where do you want to go? There? There? There?” Die pointed to various places which Kaoru didn’t even glance at.

He sighed and crossed his arms, thinking of a way to cheer up the smaller man in front of him. An idea flashed through his mischevious brain.

“ I know! Lets go do that hit the alligator game! You’ll get to let out all your troubles, you know! It works for me all the time!” he looked at Kaoru’s emotionless face hopefully.

Nothing.

“ Fine. We’ll go wherever you want to. Lead the way.” Die sounded like a cult follower, a very bored cult follower.

Kaoru shrugged and lead them to a ferris wheel. He’d seen those on television but he had never been on one, so he was curious. Die didn’t seem to mind, so he got in a carriage after Kaoru got in. They sat next to each other, but they remained silent until it started moving. Then they both looked out the windows excitedly and pointed out landmarks.

Die looked at Kaoru’s happy face and smiled fondly. As usual, the purplehead caught him looking, but this time, Die didn’t turn away.

“ Um, Kaoru… there’s something I need to tell you. It’s been bothering me for a VERY long time,” he started, rubbing the back of his head nervously.

“ What?”

“ Well… eto.. I – I love you, Kaoru.” Die’s face soon blended in with his hair.

Kaoru froze when he heard those words. He’d never been put in a situation like this, so he didn’t know how to react.

“ I’ve been feeling like this… for a long time already. I just didn’t know how to tell you. But, I really love you.” Die sounded like he was assuring himself more than the person next to him.

Kaoru’s face froze when he felt Die’s warm lips covering his own, and he surprised himself even more when he responed to the kiss, pressing his lips eagerly againts Die’s. Then he broke off the kiss, blushing.

“ Well… I –“ he started, but was cut off when Die captured his lips in another passionate kiss.

~~

// I'm sinking slowly
So hurry hold me
Your hand is all I have to keep me hanging on
Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone //

Die smiled. He remembered the kiss that he and Kaoru had shared a week ago, and the memory still made him smile from time to time. That was the moment that he really felt like he was giving Kaoru something meaningful.

He looked up as the door to the Promotion department opened and Kaoru walked in with his secretary next to him, chirping like a bird with a deathwish. He was very surprised, the highly paid composer had never ever, ever walked into the departments lower than his. He caught his lover’s gaze and winked, causing the purplehead to smile slightly.

The other workers in the department also looked very surprised, but they bowed respectively anyway, acknowledging the composer’s presence. They all bowed again when he walked out, casting a quick glance at the redhead.

‘ Kaoru…’

~~

Kaoru poured a glass of red wine for himself and Die. Several confusing thoughts crossed his mind, but he decided to talk them out with Die later on. He looked up as the latter walked in, smoking his usual cigarette.

“ Hey Kao,” he smiled, giving his lover a kiss on the cheek.

Kaoru smiled slightly, but his expression turned serious again as Die sat down across from him and picked up his wine glass.

“ Die, we need to talk… it’s important.” Kaoru looked insistent.

Die’s smile faltered slightly, but he regained his composure and looked at the purplehead calmly.

“ Okay. Talk.” He said, crossing his fingers and set his hands on the table in front of him.

“ It’s about us. I mean… I’m a composer, an important one at that, and you’re a –“

“ Office boy. I know what you’re getting at, Kaoru. If you’re trying to tell me that I’m not good enough for you, I already know. In fact, I knew it ever since we were in highschool, which is why I told you much later.” Die cut him off, tracing his finger around the mouth of the wine glass.

“ Oh. I see. But then why did you tell me anyway?” Kaoru asked quietly.

“ Because I held on to the belief that every man should walk the plank. At least I won’t regret not telling you. And I believed in you.” Die replied.

“ Me?” Kaoru sounded meek.

“ Yes. And I know that we both need each other equally, I need you as much as you need me. So if you’re trying to say that you want to break up, I won’t accept that until I see the ability for you to stand up for yourself. “ Die said firmly.

Kaoru stood up and walked over to Die, wrapping his arms around the taller one and buried his face into the crook of his neck.

“ Thank you so much. But I can take care of myself,” he pressed his lips gently against Die’s neck and walked away.

Die just sat there, looking at the glass of wine in front of him.

~~

The air was filled with tension when Die walked into Kaoru’s office, setting down the files on his table slowly. Kaoru looked up for a brief second, but he didn’t meet Die’s gaze.

“ Kaoru.” Die spoke up finally. He looked into the brown orbs that he had admired so much.

“ Die.”

“ Lets quit our jobs here. Lets go somewhere else, go away from here… with your composing skills, anyone would want to take you in to work! Lets go, ne?” Die held his hands, looking into his eyes hopefully.

“ Oh? And just how easily do you think I got this job? What will you do for a living?” Kaoru asked quietly.

“ I’ll think of something, I promise. Are you saying yes?” Die asked hopefully. “ I just want to be with you, where there are no pressures, no tension.”

Kaoru smiled sadly. He let go of the hands that held his and stood up. He walked to the door and let himself out, not turning back when Die called his name, leaving the redhead hurt deeply.

‘ Kaoru…’

=====
I looked up to him. I loved him, I cared for him. I truly wanted what was best for him, I LOVED him goddamnit!!

And he just walked away, straight out of his own office too. Maybe he thought he was trying to be a gentleman by not kicking me out of him office. I would’ve rather been kicked out.

What will happen now? I haven’t heard from him for about three days already, but the company doesn’t seem to be worried. Probably Yoshiki covered for him or something.

Kaoru. Why do you make me feel like this?
=====

~~
Knock knock knock.

Die looked up from his comic book and wondered who would be knocking on his door at 2 o’clock in the morning. Probably Toshiya looking for more booze. He shook his head and walked to the door and opened it. His eyes widened with shock.

“ Kaoru? What are you doing here?” he asked.

Kaoru ran into his arms and held Die close to him, burying his face into his chest, sobbing.

// If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted
was somebody who cares //

“ Kaoru? What’s wrong? Kaoru? Please… don’t cry ne..” Die said soothingly, holding the purplehead to him tightly.

Kaoru silenced a bit and pulled back slowly.

“ Can I stay here for the night?” he asked timidly.

Die smiled warmly. He just couldn’t say no, no matter how much his heart hurt.

“ Yes. I told you I’d always be there for you, ne?” he reminded him, causing the other man to bow his head.

// All you wanted was somebody who cares
If you need me you know I'll be there //

“ Arigatou.”

“ No problem at all.” Die lead him inside and went to the kitchen, looking for some coffee or something to give Kaoru.

He looked at Kaoru who was hugging himself on the couch, staring into space. Kaoru caught his gaze and smiled sadly. Die returned his smile and looked at the coffee machine that was bubbling away.

“ Die?” Kaoru’s voice broke the silence. Die looked at him.

“ Um?”

“ I can’t afford to lose my job. I’ve been working all my life just to get that one job… I can’t just tell them I want to give it up. I don’t want all my effort to be wasted just like that. I know I’ll regret it one day,” Kaoru looked at the floor.

Die nodded, he understood what Kaoru meant. He was about to go get a mug when Kaoru spoke again.

“ But there is something… I want, and I would never regret it, ever. “ he looked up expectantly at the redhead.

Die’s heart raced.

‘ What does he mean…?’

Kaoru got up and went to the kitchen. He reached up and brought Die’s face down and pressed his lips against Die’s, wrapping his arms securely around the taller one’s neck. Die returned the kiss but then he broke it off.

“ No, I can’t… you’ll regret it, and –“

“ No I won’t. I came here after three days of thinking, Die. I know what I’m doing. I want this, because I won’t regret it. Ever. I love you, Die. I really do,” Kaoru looked down, holding back the tears that were ready to spill down his cheeks.

Die lifted up Kaoru’s chin and gently pressed his lips on his forehead.

“ I love you too. Why can’t I ever say no to you, Kaoru?” he sighed.

“ Because you love me too,” Kaoru kissed Die lovingly.

// If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted
was somebody who cares //

~~

The next morning, Die looked at the sleeping figure in his arms lovingly. So last night wasn’t a dream, and it wasn’t nothing either. He held Kaoru closer to him and breathed in his scent, planting a kiss on his slender neck.

“ Die?” Kaoru’s voice was muffled. He looked up at Die sleepily.

“ Ohayou, Kao. Sleep well?” he asked, running hs fingers through the silky purple strands.

Kaoru nodded. He stretched and leaned against Die, having strong arms wrap themselves around him securely. He sighed contentedly.

“ Did you regret what we did, Kaoru?” Die’s voice suddenly broke the peaceful silence.

// Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone //

“ No. I understand everything more clearly now, and I’ll never regret it, Die. I love you.” He said, closing his eyes.

“ What do you mean?”

“ I know what I want, and what I was looking for,”

“ And what’s that?”

“ You.”

// If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted
was somebody who cares//
